Recipe Highlight: Picadillo

Picadillo is a beloved Puerto Rican dish that turns simple ground beef into something extraordinary. It's versatile and works in tacos, empanadas, pastelillos, or served over rice. This sofrito ground beef recipe is a staple in many Latin kitchens, known for its rich, savory flavor and flexibility with ingredients.
One of my favorite memories with Picadillo is watching my mother make it with whatever she had on hand. She taught me that sofrito is the secret to a great picadillo-it adds layers of flavor that make it taste like home. Over the years, I've tried her recipe with ground turkey or plant-based substitutes like Beyond Meat. The results are always delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (organic or 90/10 preferred)(or ground meat of choice)
  • 2 tsp Healthy Rican Adobo
  • 1 tbsp Healthy Rican Sazon
  • 2 tbsp fresh sofrito (or try our new sofrito spice blend)
  • 1/4 cup diced onions
  • 1/4 cup diced bell peppers
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp pitted green olives (optional)
  • 1/2 cup diced potatoes
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce

Instructions

  • In a medium skillet, add the ground beef to high heat. As the meat starts to cook, break up the meat into chunks.
  • Add the adobo, sazon, sofrito, and mix well into the meat.
  • Mix in the green olives and diced potatoes, cover, and reduce the heat to medium.
  • Allow to cook until the meat turns brown, approximately 10 minutes.
  • Drain excess fat if needed.
  • Add the tomato sauce and allow it to simmer for a minute or two. Just make sure the meat doesn't burn or stick to the bottom.
  • Remove from heat and enjoy with your favorite dish.
